Presidents of Madeira and Azores Assemblies Reinforce Commitment to Regional Autonomy

The President of the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, Rubina Leal, hosted her counterpart from the Azores, Luís Garcia, on the island. The meeting aimed to reinforce the commitment to Regional Autonomy and discuss the deepening of institutional cooperation between the two regions.

During the meeting, both presidents expressed a desire to increase the sharing of experiences and the development of joint initiatives to enhance their common autonomous heritage. Dissatisfaction was also voiced regarding the current Regional Finance Law model and the delay in its revision, as well as the ineffectiveness of the Territorial Mobility Mechanism for island populations.

Leal and Garcia highlighted the importance of autonomy for consolidating democracy and developing the regions, emphasizing the role of regional parliamsents in defending island interests and specificities.
