The PS parliamentary group has presented a draft resolution to the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, recommending the Regional Government universalize free nursery services.
The initiative aims to cover all resident children in the region, irrespective of their families' income, and extend this free access to the entire nursery network, including private, cooperative, and social sector institutions, through contractual agreements.
The PS states this measure is vital for reducing family burdens, promoting equal opportunities, improving work-life balance, and addressing demographic challenges like low birth rates. The party argues Madeira is the only region in Portugal without universal free nursery access, unlike mainland Portugal and the Azores, where it has been in effect since 2023.
