PS deputy Sílvia Sousa Silva has criticized the Regional Government for allegedly using profits generated by the Banana Museum for new investments without consulting banana producers. These farmers financed the facility and bore its deficits in recent years.
Sílvia Sousa Silva questioned whether the profits, which now allow the Museum to generate income for GESBA, will be distributed to producers or reinvested in an "immersive room" without their consent. The deputy suggested the money could be used to cover production losses not covered by insurance or to increase the price paid to banana producers.
The socialist recalled that over 98% of GESBA's revenue comes from bananas produced by Madeirans, who are legally obliged to deliver the fruit to the public company. The deputy also mentioned the Competition Authority's sanction against GESBA for "abuse of dominant position" and the exclusion of producers from the social bodies, removing their decision-making power.
