The president of PS-Madeira, Célia Pessegueiro, demanded this Friday that the Regional Government present solutions for the high number of problematic discharge cases.
The party criticized the missed opportunity to create approximately 460 new beds in care homes and continuing care facilities through the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). Speaking at a press conference near Nélio Mendonça Hospital, Pessegueiro addressed the worsening health problems on the island, particularly in emergency services and the lack of beds for hospitalization.
According to the PS, over 500 individuals are clinically ready for discharge in SESARAM units, awaiting a governmental response. The socialist leader rejected attempts to blame families for "social discharges," emphasizing that many of these individuals have dependencies and cannot return home due to families' lack of necessary support conditions.
Célia Pessegueiro inquired about the Regional Government's plan for creating beds in care homes and continuing care through the Regional Budget, following the loss of PRR funds. She also proposed that the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital, after the new Central and University Hospital becomes fully operational, should remain publicly managed, focusing on rehabilitation and continuing care.
