The Socialist Party (PS) has warned about the loss of purchasing power among Madeira's residents, despite the island's economic growth. Isabel Garcês, representing the PS, stated in the Legislative Assembly of Madeira that salary increases are not keeping pace with rising prices, negatively impacting families.
Expenses for fuel, housing, food, energy, and healthcare were highlighted as major pressures on household budgets. Data from the second quarter of 2026 shows the average monthly remuneration in Madeira was 87 euros below the national average, with real remuneration declining by 0.3% due to inflation.
The PS criticized the rising cost of fuel and advocated for fiscal neutrality in the petroleum products tax. The deputy also questioned the government's refusal to reduce VAT rates and supported free nursery and higher education tuition.
