PSD advocates Atlantic strategy for ferry, demands state commitment

PSD MP Bruno Melim has advocated that the discussion about a regular sea link between Madeira and the mainland should be framed within a more comprehensive Atlantic strategy, involving territorial and economic partners.

Melim considered that the Liberal Initiative's proposal, which connects the sea link to economic development and strengthening ties with the Canary Islands and other Atlantic territories, introduces an underexplored perspective. He emphasized that the route should not be seen merely as a connection to Lisbon, but as part of a wider logistical and commercial strategy.

However, the MP stressed that the realization of the ferry cannot absolve the state of responsibility, recalling the principle of territorial continuity. "It is a responsibility of the Republic," he stated, arguing that the central government must assume the necessary commitments to guarantee the link.
