The PSD has called for increased powers for the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, arguing that deepening autonomy requires constitutional reform and the allocation of more competencies to autonomous regions.
During a solemn session marking the 50th anniversary of the Madeiran parliament, Social Democrat parliamentary leader Jaime Filipe Ramos highlighted the region's progress since 1976, stating that "everything changed for the better" with the establishment of autonomous institutions.
Ramos also emphasized respect for electoral choices and strengthening the connection between the Assembly and citizens, insisting on an Assembly "stronger, with more powers and greater legislative capacity." Madeira has demonstrated its ability to legislate and govern across various sectors.
The deputy reiterated the need to proceed with constitutional revision, a process delayed for two decades, and to revise the Law on the Finances of Autonomous Regions, advocating for greater state participation in funding the additional costs associated with insularity.
