The PSD-Madeira parliamentary group visited the Higher Education Office to highlight the impact of the 'Insular Student Program'. This initiative, active since 2018, aims to support young Madeirans studying outside the region by easing the financial burden of travel for their families.
MP Bruno Melim stated that the program has already assisted approximately 11,000 students, with a regional financial investment exceeding 36.5 million euros. He explained that the program allows students to avoid large upfront travel costs, as the Regional Government covers these expenses in advance, ensuring island status does not hinder access to higher education.
The PSD-Madeira dismissed opposition criticism regarding alleged access difficulties, confirming that a higher education placement notification is sufficient to start the process. "It is false that students are prevented from accessing the 'Insular Student Program' due to not yet having proof of enrollment," Melim declared, calling for this "repeated lie from the opposition" to be definitively debunked. The party reiterated its commitment to policies promoting equal access to education and reducing the additional costs of insularity.
