The Regional Secretary for Inclusion, Labour and Youth, Paula Margarido, assured that no elderly person will be left without a spot in a Residential Structure for the Elderly (ERPI) in Madeira due to a lack of funds.
Currently, between 1,200 and 1,250 people are on the waiting list, but the executive plans to increase both the capacity of care homes and home support services, which already assist around 3,000 individuals.
Funding for social places, such as those in the new Santa Clara Social Complex, is provided by the Madeira Social Security Institute, with family contributions calculated based on income. The monthly cost of a place is approximately 1,200 euros, with Social Security covering the full amount when families lack the financial means.
The new ERPI will also offer 15 intermediate beds for patients discharged from hospital awaiting placement in other social services. The Regional Government will cover these costs until the end of the year, while negotiations are underway for national budget funding from 2027 onwards.
