Some guides contend that a portion of the fees collected from visitors should ensure the trails remain clean, well-maintained, and safe, particularly as the area is part of the Madeira Natural Park. However, the issue is exacerbated by the careless behavior of hikers who leave their trash behind.
These complaints arise as increasing visitor numbers place pressure on the island's natural attractions. Reports describe Pico do Areeiro as "manic," with large crowds, and one guide noted "so many cigarette ends at the top of Pico Ruivo."
