The Democratic Union of Nurses of Portugal (SINDEPOR) has announced that SESARAM has guaranteed the hiring of 72 additional nurses by the end of 2026. These professionals are part of an initial recruitment pool of 200 nurses, of whom 114 have already been hired.
During a meeting with SESARAM's administration, the union stressed the need for more hires to alleviate workload and address violations of legal rest periods between shifts. SINDEPOR warned of potential "disclaimers of responsibility" and estimates SESARAM will require a thousand nurses by 2030, considering population and tourism growth.
Discussions also covered care for "complex discharges," salary point claims, and career progression. The union further proposed reduced shifts for nurses over 55 and a day off for their birthdays.
