The dog participated in 17 battles, distinguishing himself by his ability to detect poison gas attacks before humans, saving numerous lives. Stubby was decorated, received medals, and was promoted to sergeant, becoming the first dog in US military history to achieve such rank.

After the war, Stubby returned as a popular figure, meeting presidents and being celebrated as a symbol of bravery. His legend includes capturing a German spy using only his teeth. Stubby's memory is preserved at the Smithsonian, a testament to his loyalty and courage.
