Tropical night recorded in Madeira above 1,100 meters altitude

The Pico Alto meteorological station, located at 1,118 meters above sea level, registered a minimum temperature of 20.8ºC during the past night. This value is considered unusual for its elevation.

Pico Alto was one of seven stations of the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) in the region where the minimum temperature did not drop below 20ºC. This phenomenon, known as a tropical night, is more common in the island's coastal areas.

Besides Pico Alto, tropical nights were recorded in Santa Cruz/Aeroporto, Funchal (Observatory and Lido), Ponta do Sol/Lugar de Baixo, Porto Moniz, Caniçal/Ponta de São Lourenço, and Selvagem Grande.
