The Union of Workers in Public and Social Functions of the South and Autonomous Regions (STFPSSRA) is calling on workers to take part in a demonstration for the right to housing, scheduled for 14 November at 11am on Rua Fernão de Ornelas, in Funchal.
In a statement, the union notes that in October the median price of homes in the Autonomous Region of Madeira reached €3,779 per square metre, 4.2% more than in the same month a year earlier. The union has joined the Porta a Porta movement and criticises policies it says favour property speculation, as well as the Regional Government, which it accuses of failing to provide effective responses.
The union calls for urgent public policies that place the right to housing above economic interests, citing Article 65 of the Portuguese Constitution.
