The number of vehicles in Madeira saw a 145.77% increase between 2000 and 2025, rising from 84,057 to 206,588. In Funchal, the growth was 89.53%, with vehicles increasing from 46,262 to 87,681 during the same period.
These figures, presented during European Mobility Week, also indicate a significant rise in road accidents both regionally and in Funchal. The exhibition also highlights measures implemented by the Funchal City Council to improve safety and sustainable mobility, such as raised pedestrian crossings and speed bumps, which contributed to a reduction in accidents in the municipality between 2024 and 2025.
A Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan will be created for Funchal to reorganize mobility and define municipal policies in the short, medium, and long term. The public tender for this plan is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
