Construction of the €48.5 million Madeira SkyPark project has begun in Curral das Freiras, in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos, according to its promoters.
The development is scheduled to open in 2028 and will link Curral das Freiras with Jardim da Serra. The promoters say it will include the world's highest cable car by ground clearance, at 706 metres above the terrain. The project also includes two cable car routes, a 2,300-metre zipline, an adventure park, a nature interpretation centre and space for local businesses.
The promoters expect the project to create 50 direct jobs and attract 200,000 visitors a year. In a statement sent to Lusa, the developers said construction followed geological and environmental studies.
The JPP party remains opposed, citing financial and environmental concerns, and has called on the Regional Government to clarify the terms of the concession.
