The European Commission has announced a new strategy and regulatory package for the Outermost Regions (ORs), such as Madeira and the Azores. The aim is to adapt European Union legislation in areas like agriculture, fisheries, and migration to better reflect the unique realities and specific conditions of these regions.
The proposals intend to boost the socio-economic development of the ORs by leveraging their geo-strategic potential and strengthening regional integration. They also aim to increase competitiveness, support specialization in fields such as the blue economy and renewable energies, and improve adaptation to climate change.
The plan includes promoting employment, access to education and social inclusion, as well as measures to combat poverty and improve access to housing and healthcare. The proposal, covering the EU's nine ORs, including Portugal's, still requires approval from the European Parliament and the Council of the EU.
