A social media post questioned whether hotel establishments with their own waste facilities could dispose of excess waste in public bins. Most online comments indicated this practice is not permitted.
The Funchal Regulation on Solid Waste and Polluting Behaviors stipulates that hotels must have their own compactors for waste disposal and removal, sized according to their daily production. Furthermore, hotels and other large establishments are obligated to separate recyclable and organic waste.
Improper use of communal bins is considered an offense, subject to a heavy fine, according to the same municipal regulation.
