Caniçal Celebrates Nossa Senhora da Piedade at Sea

The traditional maritime procession of Nossa Senhora da Piedade brought together hundreds of people and vessels off the coast of Caniçal.

Around 300 people aboard the tuna fishing vessel Condor, and hundreds more on about fifty other boats, participated in the maritime procession of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, which took place this afternoon off the coast of Caniçal.

The procession reached the Quinta do Lorde area, where it waited to disembark before ascending Monte Gordo to collect the image of the saint. While this operation was underway, most of the accompanying boats took refuge in Abra Bay, awaiting its resumption.

After being collected, the image will be transported to the village of Caniçal, where it will stay for the weekend before returning to its chapel tomorrow afternoon. The sunny afternoon and light breeze accompanied one of the most attended expressions of faith in Caniçal's fishing community, a tradition that once again brings together tuna boats, fishing vessels, recreational boats, and inflatables at sea.
