The CDU (United Democratic Coalition) has classified the destruction of the former Porto Novo Cold Storage facility in Santa Cruz as a crime of squandering public money, destruction of public property, and heritage.
According to Regional Coordinator Edgar Silva, this situation is not isolated, citing "cases of brutal destruction and dismantling of equipment and infrastructure where public money was poured" across the region. The CDU points to the "scandal of vandalism in public archives, destroyed equipment, and scrapped installations and stock materials."
Edgar Silva stated that "thousands upon thousands of euros were wasted" at the Porto Novo Cold Storage, with Regional Budget and European funds being "criminally squandered." For the CDU, this is "one of the greatest monuments to criminal squandering" and "such a crime against the public interest should not go unpunished."
