August 1st marks the centenary of the birth of Painter Master Arnaldo Louro de Almeida (1926-2026), who served as Professor and Director of the Fine Arts Sector at the former Madeira Academy of Music and Fine Arts (ANBAM).
Arriving in Madeira during a period of profound cultural and aesthetic shifts in Europe, Louro de Almeida introduced new concepts that fostered a high-quality art school, comparable to those in Lisbon and Porto. He was admired by students as a "Universal Man" for his libertarian and personalized pedagogy, focused on motivating each student to find their own path.
Although he dedicated much of his time to teaching, Louro de Almeida left a significant body of work across Portugal and Madeira, including the mural "The Last Supper" at the Francisco Franco School. He received several medals and honorable mentions, and one of his paintings was censored and seized by the PIDE in 1946. His name now designates a school in Lisbon, and a generation of his students became educators at Madeira's higher education art institutions, later integrated into the island's university.
