New signage at Funchal Marina has caused discontent due to the priority given to foreign languages over Portuguese. This inversion is seen by some as cultural dilution and an excessive concession to tourism, potentially diminishing the area's genuine charm.
The commercial logic behind this choice is convenience for yachtsmen and cruise passengers, who use English as a universal language. However, it is argued that good bilingual design could give equal prominence to both languages.
The decision to place Portuguese second is interpreted as treating the space as a private resort rather than an extension of Funchal city. The need for municipal regulations to protect Portuguese on public signage is questioned.
