Chega MP for Madeira, Francisco Gomes, accused the Regional Government of "promoting an uncontrolled immigration policy," alleging it serves "the interests of hotel groups and the civil construction sector." The parliamentarian also urged the Republic's Government to adopt urgent measures to halt immigrant entry into the region.
According to Gomes, Madeira has more than doubled its resident immigrant population in the last four years, an increase of approximately 160%. He linked this trend to worsening insecurity, crime, housing pressure, and precarious labour conditions.
The MP criticized the Regional Government for allegedly "opening Madeira's doors" to serve economic interests over the safety and quality of life of Madeirans. Gomes also accused the Republic's Government of "passively observing" the migratory phenomenon and called for a shift in national immigration policies.
