The CHEGA Municipal Group in the Funchal Municipal Assembly has criticized the Funchal City Council's (CMF) "inertia and insensitivity" concerning a high fire risk on Caminho Velho da Igreja, in São Roque.
According to the party, despite being notified in late 2025 to clear the land, the owner, an elderly man with health issues, communicated his inability and requested municipal assistance. Although the resident cleared his plot, a dense stand of eucalyptus trees remains untouched in front of the houses, posing a danger.
CHEGA demands immediate CMF intervention with municipal resources to cut and clear the vegetation, as well as support for elderly or incapacitated residents in clearing land, and coordination between municipal services for vulnerable cases.
