On the Ponta da Cruz Promenade, a mural painted in May 2004 by South African artists to commemorate 10 years of Democracy and the country's first free multiracial elections is now covered by climbing plants.
The artwork, which marked the end of the Apartheid regime, was created with the support of the Funchal Municipal Council. More than 22 years later, vegetation has taken over the painting, leaving only a plaque visible.
The mural's disappearance raises questions about the preservation of public art and historical memory on the island.
