Encyclopedic Dictionary of Madeira Gains Two New Volumes

The ‘Encyclopedic Dictionary of Madeira’ has been enriched with two new volumes, presented during the Madeira Global Forum. The project's coordinator, José Eduardo Franco, highlighted the initiative as a fundamental reference for understanding the Region, describing it as a "monumental work".

This significant project, the result of twenty years of research and collaboration with over 500 international researchers, aims to consolidate knowledge about Madeira and its cultural identity over six centuries. The new volumes feature entries on global figures such as Winston Churchill and Christopher Columbus, reflecting the island's historical connection to the world.

Franco cautioned that the completion of the planned ten volumes depends on continued governmental support and lamented delays caused by the pandemic and bureaucracy. João Paulo Oliveira e Costa, who presented the volumes, praised the "monumental" nature of the printed work, considering it a lasting heritage and an identity link for all Madeirans.
