Ângelo Correia, former Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, highlighted identity, diaspora, and autonomy as central pillars of Madeiran identity during his conference at the Madeira Global Forum.
Correia emphasized the importance of strengthening ties with emigrant communities and investing in the blue economy, without neglecting the autonomy gained after the 25th of April revolution. He stressed that identity is a dynamic element, shaped by historical heritage and the capacity for evolution.
The former official pointed out regional autonomy as a fundamental democratic achievement for Madeira's economic and institutional growth. He also advocated for a complementary relationship between the central state and autonomous regions, and identified the sea as a strategic sector with potential in areas like international ship registration and aquaculture.
