The Funchal City Council is bolstering its urban cleaning resources to address the increased population pressure caused by tourism. Mayor Jorge Carvalho stated that the strategy includes hiring more staff and increasing the frequency of waste collection routes.
Carvalho acknowledged that Funchal's significant tourism requires tailored responses to balance cleanliness with the enjoyment of the city and commercial activities. The reinforcement includes waste collection during peak times, such as Sundays and cruise ship arrival days, to prevent overloading urban facilities.
Furthermore, the mayor noted that tourist pressure impacts other municipal services, like water supply. Revenue from the tourist tax, projected to reach around 14 million euros this year, is used to cover the additional costs generated by tourism, with an increase anticipated for 2027.
