The Madeira Volcanism Caves in São Vicente have remained closed for six years, awaiting safety assessment studies and the development of an emergency plan. Fissures detected within the volcanic structure prompted the closure of the site, which previously attracted approximately 150,000 visitors annually.
Local retirees João Teixeira and João Rodrigues act as informal guardians of the site, once a significant tourist attraction for the region. The São Vicente Municipal Council acknowledges the caves' tourism value and economic impact but has postponed reopening until all safety conditions are met.
