Gonçalo Maia Camelo: "There are currently two Madeiras"

Gonçalo Maia Camelo, speaking at the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, stated that the State of the Region is "bipolar," with "two Madeiras" existing: the one presented by the Government and the reality experienced by the Madeiran people.

According to Camelo, a Madeira "where the cost of living grows faster than families' ability to keep up" coexists with a Madeira where companies face "excessive bureaucracy, prohibitions, and contextual costs."

He questioned whether the quality of life for Madeirans is keeping pace with the economic growth celebrated by the Government, arguing that growth should not be an end in itself, but a tool. The Liberal Initiative prefers to measure success by results, not statistics, as Madeirans "do not live by statistics."

Camelo advocated for a change in methods, with a Government less focused on announcing records and more on evaluating and reforming, prioritizing the quality of results over the quantity of expenditure.
