Heavy rain floods roads, swells rivers and delays flights in Madeira

Intense rain and bad weather disrupted traffic in Funchal and delayed flights at the airport, with rivers running high.

Intense rain that fell early in the evening, after a day already marked by bad weather, disrupted traffic and movement in several areas of Funchal and elsewhere on the island.

At the airport, flights were delayed and disrupted. On social media and citizen journalism sites, images of flooding multiplied, notably on the Estrada Monumental and in the tunnel at the 40 level, along with a strong flow in the Machico river.

Some users blamed a natural phenomenon, while others criticised the stormwater drainage system, describing it as outdated, deficient and poorly maintained.
