The Secretary-General of Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP), Élvio Sousa, accused the Madeira Regional Government of inaction in the face of the country's highest inflation, which is affecting families and businesses.
Sousa argues that the priority should be reducing the cost of living, promoting controlled-cost housing, and lowering taxes, including VAT, which he deems the highest among ultra-peripheral regions. The JPP proposes the return of the 30% fiscal differential enshrined in the Regional Finance Law.
The JPP leader refuted claims that VAT reduction requires European Union authorization, suggesting the government should cut expenses and use VAT revenues to support the population, rather than investing in projects like golf or mega-yachts. Sousa also criticized the lack of investment in public housing under previous PSD governments.
