JPP Criticizes "Postponed Promises" and Government Defends Broad Consensus on Autonomy Debate

The Legislative Assembly of Madeira hosted a debate requested by the JPP on "Autonomy and Constitutional Review." The party criticized how regional issues are handled in Lisbon, pointing to "postponed promises" in Health, Housing, Education, and Mobility.

Paulo Alves of the JPP highlighted Autonomy as a fundamental pillar but warned of persistent structural problems. He criticized the unequal relationship with the Republic's Government on issues like the mobility social subsidy and the ferry process, accusing them of "only promising and not delivering."

The JPP advocates for revising the Regional Finance Law and the Constitution to ensure fairer funding, with greater tax powers and legislative competencies. They also propose enshrining the island and outermost region's specificity and creating mechanisms for shared maritime resource governance.
