JPP laments rejection of proposals to shield Calheta water concession from privatization

The deputies of Juntos pelo Povo (JPP) regretted the rejection by the Legislative Assembly of Madeira of proposed amendments to a regional legislative decree.

The decree aims to grant the Empresa de Electricidade da Madeira (EEM) the concession for the private use of water resources associated with the Calheta Hydroelectric Plant. JPP presented proposals to ensure that the concession and management of the project could not be transferred to private entities.

The proposals, which aimed to enshrine the non-transferable nature of management and keep the concessionaire within the regional public business sector, were rejected with votes against from PSD, CDS, and Iniciativa Liberal, and an abstention from Chega. JPP believes the Assembly missed an opportunity to strengthen public protection guarantees for a strategic resource.
