The Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party calls for enhanced European Union support to lower the costs of air and maritime transport in outermost regions (ORs).
According to JPP Secretary-General Élvio Sousa, territorial continuity is crucial for Madeira, ensuring equal opportunities and economic competitiveness. This stance aligns with the European Commission's new strategy for ORs, aiming for stronger intervention in passenger and freight transport, based on Article 349 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.
The JPP argues that the EU already acknowledges the persistent costs faced by ORs due to remoteness, insularity, and small markets, allowing for specific support measures. The European Democratic Party (EDP) also backs the new strategy, emphasizing the significance of Article 349 and advocating for sufficient financial resources for ORs in the upcoming EU budget.
