The Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) parliamentary group in the Madeira Regional Legislative Assembly will press for changes to the legal framework governing parliamentary inquiry committees, in place since 1978 and last amended in 2017, which the party considers insufficient.
The JPP wants three points enshrined: live broadcasting of meetings, a collective of rapporteurs and priority for the chair to go to the party that proposed the committee. The proposal was filed on 28 October and, according to the party, is still awaiting the meeting of the specialised committee, a required step before it goes to the plenary.
JPP leader Lina Pereira criticised the speed with which PSD bills reach committees. The party also notes that the rapporteur role has always been held by a PSD deputy and points to the 2024 August wildfires inquiry as an example of poor transparency. The PSD has not yet publicly responded.
