The Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party expressed satisfaction with the return of the seized 'gaiado' fish to fishermen in Caniçal. The party highlighted that the situation caused concern within the fishing community and stressed the need to clarify regulations regarding fish consumption for family and personal use.
The JPP believes the authorities' operation also requires explanation, particularly concerning the rules and procedures that led to the seizure. Deputy Jéssica Teles stated that public pressure contributed to the outcome and that the fish's return will allow the tradition of distributing dried 'gaiado' sandwiches during the Festa da Nossa Senhora da Piedade to continue.
The party advocates for fishermen to receive clear information on permissible activities and procedures. They emphasize that traditional practices of salting and drying 'gaiado' should be considered. The JPP suggests the Regional Government, in collaboration with fishing associations, clarify rules for fish usage, even for non-commercial purposes, to prevent differing legal interpretations.
