The Left Bloc (BE) "vehemently condemned" the visit of Israel's ambassador to Madeira and his reception by the President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, and the President of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, Rubina Leal.
The party considers it "shameful" that regional institutions seek to deepen relations with Israel "given the current situation in Palestine," stating that "political normalization cannot exist in the face of the genocide of thousands of men, women, and children in the Gaza Strip."
BE highlighted that, despite Madeira's institutional limitations in foreign policy, the region has a political responsibility to "set an example, affirm the values of peace, human rights, and international law" and call on the Republic's institutions to orient Portuguese foreign policy by these principles.
