The President of the Regional Government has reiterated the need to maintain and strengthen European support for outermost regions, arguing that it should not be reduced based on economic growth or each territory's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
During a meeting with a delegation from the European Parliament's Committee on Regional Development, led by Younous Omarjee, the official claimed the maintenance of instruments compensating for Madeira's structural disadvantages within the 2028-2034 EU financial framework.
Albuquerque also insisted that funding should continue to be allocated directly by the European Union, rejecting the transfer of responsibilities to member states. He highlighted permanent constraints such as distance, transport costs, small market size, and social burdens, emphasizing the strategic value of these regions for the EU.
