The Government of Madeira will launch the public tender for the third phase of the new Funchal Hospital for the second time, increasing the base price to 415 million euros.
Regional Secretary for Equipment and Infrastructure, Pedro Rodrigues, explained that this increase of approximately 50% compared to the first tender, which was declared void, is justified by "international instability" and dependence on the external market. The project, covering general infrastructure, finishes, and technical installations, is expected to start in early 2025 and be completed by the end of 2030.
The initial tender received no proposals from the five invited consortia. The Madeira Central and University Hospital, located in Santa Quitéria, will have around 600 beds, a helipad, and 1,200 parking spaces. The project's completion, initially estimated for 2027, has faced successive delays.
