Madeira has lowest daily alcohol consumption in Portugal, but higher obesity and smoking rates

The Autonomous Region of Madeira stands out nationally for its low daily alcohol consumption, with only 7.3% of the population aged 15 or over drinking every day. This figure is significantly lower than the national average of 15.3% and the lowest among all Portuguese regions.

However, data from the 2025 National Health Survey, released by INE, indicates that Madeira has higher rates of obesity and smoking than the national average. Obesity affects 20.9% of Madeirans, placing the region third in the country, behind only the Azores and Oeste e Vale do Tejo. The proportion of smokers in Madeira also exceeds the national average, with 16.0% smoking, and 13.7% doing so daily.

Furthermore, Madeirans rate their oral health less favourably than the national average, with only 53.8% considering it good or very good. In contrast, daily consumption of vegetables and salads in Madeira (42.3%) is slightly above the national average (40.6%).
