Madeira opens new space for accessibility and inclusion

A new space in Funchal aims to ease access to assistive technology and support greater independence for people with functional diversity.

From 28 October, Madeira will have a new space dedicated to promoting accessibility, inclusion and independence for people with functional diversity. The 'Espaço com Sentido' will open at 12 noon at the premises of the Accessibility and Assistive Aids Division (DAAT) on Rua dos Ilhéus, in Funchal.

The project is a partnership between the Regional Directorate of Education and the MEO Foundation. Its main goal is to make assistive technologies easier to access and to develop responses that improve quality of life and social participation.

The facility will host thematic workshops, training sessions and educational activities, and will offer specialised support to people with functional diversity, professionals and families. It is equipped with adapted technological and teaching resources in areas such as augmentative and alternative communication, digital accessibility and educational and social inclusion.

The opening will be attended by regional education director João Costa e Silva, MEO Foundation chief executive Madalena Albuquerque, and the institution's director, Carolina Pita Negrão.
