Madeira's natural gas supply is secured during the REN Atlântico workers' strike, which runs until August 25th. The guarantee was established after efforts in Lisbon, where the Southern Union of Workers in Transforming Industries, Energy, and Environmental Activities (SITE Sul) authorized the loading of six gas tankers destined for the Autonomous Region.
This resolution follows warnings from the Regional Government, which had requested urgent measures from the Ministry of Environment and Energy to ensure the continuity of supply. Regional Secretary for Economy, José Manuel Rodrigues, had highlighted the potential impact of the strike on the Sines liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal and, consequently, on Madeira's supply, which is vital for the Vitória Thermal Power Plant (CTV3), responsible for approximately 35% of the region's thermal energy production.
José Manuel Rodrigues expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the negotiation process, emphasizing that the solution safeguards the region's supply and prevents disruptions for families, businesses, and public services. He thanked the Government of the Republic, operational entities, and union structures for their cooperation in addressing Madeira's needs, assuring that the situation will continue to be monitored to ensure normal supply to the region.
