A 30-year-old man from Funchal died after being struck by an ambulance on the A1 motorway while it was en route to assist him.

A 30-year-old man, originally from Funchal, died on Wednesday night on the A1 motorway in the Mealhada area after being hit by the ambulance that was dispatched to provide assistance.

Reports indicate the victim was previously seen driving erratically with his vehicle's lights off. He later abandoned the car and proceeded on foot along the highway.

Upon arrival, emergency services found the man in the roadway and he was struck by the Mealhada Fire Department ambulance. Despite resuscitation efforts, death was pronounced at the scene. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
