New European Storm Naming Season Begins in September

The new season for naming extratropical storms in Europe began on September 1st, with Portugal participating in the southwest group.

The new season for naming extratropical storms in Europe started on September 1st and runs until August 31st, 2027.

Portugal is part of the southwest group, through the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), which, along with other partner meteorological services, defined the list of 21 names for this season. Storms are named when orange or red-level weather warnings are issued, with wind being the primary criterion.

The system aims to simplify communication of potentially dangerous weather phenomena and enhance coordination between national meteorological services and Civil Protection authorities. Tropical cyclones transitioning into extratropical storms retain their original designation.
