The Regional Secretary for Inclusion, Labor, and Youth, Paula Margarido, presented the diploma approving the regional Statute for the Elderly at the Legislative Assembly of Madeira. The statute aims to adapt legislation to the island's demographic reality, where the elderly represent over 20% of the population.
Margarido emphasized that the diploma "adds a regional vision of aging, adapted to Madeira's reality and guided by a simple principle: always place the elderly person at the center of public intervention." The legislation values home-based care, teleassistance, support for informal caregivers, and the prevention of violence and neglect against the elderly.
According to the regional secretary, this statute consolidates a public policy already in development, with continuous investment in improving social responses for a more dignified, active, and participatory aging process. The Recovery and Resilience Plan already supports the creation and requalification of 616 places in residential structures for the elderly.
