Porto Santo Recorded Hottest August Since 1961

Madeira experienced above-average temperatures throughout August, with all four of the archipelago's reference weather stations recording warmer-than-usual conditions, according to preliminary data from the Portuguese Institute for Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA).

The most significant result was recorded in Porto Santo, where the average temperature was 1.6°C above the 1991–2020 norm. This marks the highest average temperature recorded there during August since 1961. Above-average temperatures were also registered at the Funchal Observatory, Chão do Areeiro, and Santana weather stations.

Two additional temperature records were set: Porto Santo registered a new record for the highest minimum temperature, while Selvagem Grande recorded a new maximum temperature record. Rainfall was more mixed, with Santana and Porto Santo receiving more rain than usual, while Funchal and Chão do Areeiro recorded deficits. A new daily rainfall record was also registered at Prazeres.
