The Socialist Party (PS) advocated, during the solemn session marking the 50th anniversary of the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, for the construction of a "New Autonomy" focused on better living conditions for the people of Madeira and Porto Santo. The socialist caucus criticized the postponement of the review of the Law on the Finances of the Autonomous Regions, considering the successive delays to be disrespectful of the Region's will.
The PS highlighted the gap between economic growth (86% increase in GDP between 2015 and 2025) and income evolution (39.1% increase in average monthly remuneration) as a major issue. The party calls for a more diversified economy capable of generating better salaries and a more equitable distribution of wealth.
The party lamented the lack of a solution to compensate for the permanent costs of insularity, fifty years after the regional parliament's creation, and expects the review of the Finance Law to occur before 2029. The PS also called for a strengthened role for the Legislative Assembly, warning against excessive "governmentalization" of Autonomy, which belongs to the people.
