The Funchal branch of the Socialist Party (PS) has welcomed the Municipal Chamber's announcement regarding the creation of a Municipal Police Force, a proposal long advocated by the party.
In a statement, the PS considers the decision "only late" and proof that the "PSD/CDS executive has finally opened its eyes." The party emphasizes that this measure aims to strengthen public space surveillance and enhance city safety, freeing up the PSP for crime fighting.
The PS recalls its consistent advocacy for this body since 2019, facing opposition from the PSD. The proposal was part of the PS's electoral program for the 2025 local elections, and the party regrets that the executive's intransigence has incurred "costs" for the population in terms of security and traffic issues.
