The PSD/Madeira parliamentary group has announced it will propose legislative changes to combat geographical barriers imposed by online commerce platforms and multinational companies on consumers in the Autonomous Regions.
The aim is to ensure that Madeirans can access products and services under conditions similar to those available on the mainland. Deputy Bruno Melim explained that current national and European legislation is ill-suited to the island and outermost regions' reality, with companies preferring to refuse orders to Madeira rather than comply with the law.
The party proposes strengthening online oversight mechanisms, increasing sanctions for non-compliant companies, and prohibiting differentiated treatment based on the consumer's geographical location. Melim emphasized that Madeirans should not be treated as second-class citizens and should have the same right to access products and conditions as residents on the mainland.
